In this section, we will address some of our patients' most frequently asked questions about this ophthalmological specialty:
What is Oculoplastic Surgery ?
Oculoplastics refers to reconstructive surgical procedures related to the eyes and surrounding structures. These surgeries can be reconstructive, to correct structural abnormalities caused by trauma, tumors, etc.; functional, to correct defects such as congenital or acquired drooping eyelids; or cosmetic, to improve the appearance of the eye contour.
What are the reasons for undergoing an oculoplastic procedure?
Plastic surgery may be performed to treat the following common abnormalities:
- Drooping upper eyelids ( ptosis ).
- Eyelids that turn inwards (entropion) or outwards (ectropion).
- Eye problems caused by thyroid gland diseases such as Graves-Basedow disease (orbitopathy that causes "bulging eyes").
- Skin cancers or other tumors or cysts around the eye.
- Weakness around the eye or eyelids caused by peripheral facial paralysis .
- Problems with the tear ducts.
- Injuries to the eye or the area around it.
- Congenital defects in the eye socket (the bone around the eye).
- Cosmetic problems, such as excess skin on the upper eyelids, swollen lower eyelids, and "droopy" eyelids

Preventing eyelid surgery:
Before discussing eyelid correction methods, it's important to remember that prevention is always preferable to treatment. Drinking adequate water, eating a balanced diet that includes fiber and minerals, maintaining a good sleep schedule, wearing good quality sunglasses, and keeping your eyes clean and moisturized are all ways to avoid eye surgery.
