Farsightedness, what is it and how is it corrected?

Hyperopia is one of the four refractive errors that affect human vision, along with myopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia, which can be corrected with glasses, contact lenses, or refractive surgery.

Refractive errors are also known as ametropia . Due to a defect in the optical system, the eye cannot focus a clear image. The refractive error that causes hyperopia (farsightedness) is not progressive and does not have serious consequences, but the degree of your hyperopia does affect your ability to focus.

People with severe farsightedness can only see objects clearly at a great distance even if they try to focus, while those with mild farsightedness can see objects clearly that are closer.

Farsightedness is usually present from birth and is often hereditary.

It can usually be easily corrected with the use of glasses or contact lenses.

If you have mild farsightedness and do not wish to use glasses or contact lenses, an effective option is refractive surgery using laser beams.

At Clínica Nivaria, we specialize in laser refractive surgery. Currently, the LASIK laser technique is the first-line option for correcting farsightedness (hyperopia). However, when a patient is not a candidate for laser refractive surgery, they may consider an intraocular lens implant if their condition allows it. The ophthalmologist will determine the most appropriate technique for each individual case. Therefore, it is important to schedule an eye exam where each patient's case will be analyzed.

Five reasons to demonstrate the advantages of laser refractive surgery:

  1. This technique is performed under topical anesthesia, meaning that anesthetic drops are applied to the patient's eye, without the need for injections or any other type of sedation.
  2. Laser treatment is completely painless. The patient will only feel a beam of light being applied to their eye.
  3. The duration of the complete treatment per eye is approximately 5 minutes.
  4. This is an outpatient technique, which allows the patient to leave the Center just one hour after having the treatment, without the need for hospitalization.
  5. Once the treatment is finished, it is not necessary to cover the eyes, so the patient will only notice a slight discomfort during the first few hours after the procedure.

If you have any doubts about whether you have a refractive error or need glasses of any kind, we invite you to visit Clínica Nivaria in Santa Cruz de Tenerife . We will be happy to assist you and provide you with the best guidance on the vision correction you need.
