What does Lasik laser surgery involve?

The correction of refractive errors using the LASIK technique is a simple, quick, safe, painless, and personalized procedure. LASIK laser surgery is primarily indicated for the correction of myopia (nearsightedness), although it can also be used in cases of hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism.

Vision problems arise from an imbalance between the curvature of the cornea and the length of the eye. This causes light rays to refract incorrectly, resulting in blurred vision . This type of surgery can reshape the cornea so that light rays focus properly on the retina, allowing images to be seen clearly.

How is the Laski laser operation performed?

There are three steps necessary to perform this surgery:

  1. Using a special instrument for this type of procedure called a Microkeratome , one of our leading ophthalmological surgeons will lift a very thin layer of corneal tissue, thus freeing the area of the eye where the laser will act.
  2. The surgeon will apply the laser to the middle layer of the cornea to reshape it for a few seconds. This laser has a safety mechanism called an eye-tracker , which monitors eye movements, allowing the laser pulses to be directed to the specific areas of the cornea that need to be reshaped to correct the refractive error.
  3. Then the corneal tissue is repositioned and reattaches without the need for stitches.

The operation will last approximately 10 minutes per eye, followed by a controlled rest period at our Ophthalmology Clinic located in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, after which the patient will be able to return home.

What happens after Lasik?

In 90% of cases, people who undergo this procedure achieve 20/20 to 20/40 vision without glasses or contact lenses.
