Headaches or migraines, do I need glasses?

Headaches or migraines are one of the most common conditions. Many times the use of appropriate glasses can be the solution to this problem.

The so-called "eye migraines" are a vision mismatch, transient, which can affect only one eye or both. The eye migraine can present without pain and appear suddenly. Your symptoms may be accompanied by:

  • Vision of zigzag lines.
  • Vision of flashing lights.
  • Other visual hallucinations.
  • Temporary blind spots.
  • Sensitivity to bright light.
  • Blurry vision.
  • Eye pain

On other occasions, these visual imbalances precede a painful migraine episode. In addition, it may be accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, photophobia, fatigue and balance disorders. Its duration ranges from a few minutes or even whole days. This will depend on the type of headache that each person presents.

Many people resort to the quickest solution that is to take painkillers, but this is known to be a temporary solution and that episodes of migraines or headaches will recur. Therefore, given the symptoms of ocular migraine, it is essential to go to an ophthalmologic visit.

Headaches or migraines associated with myopia

Myopia is a refractive problem that manifests when the patient perceives distant objects blurred. Myopia is because the image is formed before reaching the retina, either because the cornea, the lens or both are very powerful, or because the eye is longer than normal. The best method to treat myopia is monofocal glasses with divergent lenses.

In this sense, in migraines with aura, a transient visual disorder usually appears in the same area of the visual field of both eyes, which normally lasts between 20 and 30 minutes and is usually followed by headache.

What are your causes?

Its specific causes are unknown, but it can occur for different reasons, such as food, hormonal changes, changes in weather, stress, lack of sleep, or intermittent light flickering. It may also be due to genetic inheritance, since 70% of people who suffer from migraines have a family member who has also suffered from them. And, without a doubt, myopia is one of the causes that drive eye headaches.

The best treatment of a migraine is prevention, knowing all the factors involved, such as hormonal changes, sleeping habits and meals, but also others such as vision regulation. Checking with a doctor if the episodes are repetitive is key, as is the visit to the Ophthalmologist. Discarding the existence of an eye problem that has not been detected is essential. A simple correction of the sight graduation could put an end to these episodes.
